What it does

Merge fields you map yourself

Point each form field at the merge field it belongs in. Address fields split into the six parts Mailchimp expects, and the four it treats as required are checked before anything is sent.

Tags applied as the contact is created

Attach tags on submission so the segment exists the moment someone subscribes, rather than after your next manual clean-up.

Subscribed or pending, your call

Create contacts already subscribed, or as pending so Mailchimp sends its own confirmation email first.

Getting it working

  1. 01

    Add your API key

Paste a Mailchimp API key into the xpac settings screen. It is stored write-only: the browser never receives it back, not even in the settings form.

  2. 02

    Choose the audience

Open the form in the block editor, add the Mailchimp delivery, and pick which audience the entries belong to.

  3. 03

    Map your fields

Match each form field to a merge field. Anything you leave unmapped is simply not sent.

Every setting

What you can configure, and where it lives. Site settings apply everywhere; the rest are set on the form itself.

Setting Scope Notes
API key Site setting Write-only. Never returned to the browser.
Audience Per delivery Read live from your account.
Status Per delivery subscribed or pending.
Tags Per delivery Applied to every contact this form creates.
Merge fields Per delivery Form field to merge tag, one row each.

Questions

What happens if someone is already on the list?

Their contact is updated rather than duplicated. Mailchimp matches on email address, so a second submission refreshes the merge fields you mapped and adds any new tags.

Does a Mailchimp outage lose the entry?

No. The entry is stored by Forms before any delivery runs, so a failed send is a delivery you can inspect and retry, never a lost submission.

Can one form write to more than one audience?

Yes. Add the delivery twice and give each copy its own audience, mapping and tags.

Is the API key visible to anyone who can edit a page?

No. It is a site setting rather than a form setting, it never leaves the server, and the settings screen shows only whether one is present.
