What it does
Judged before the deliveries run
A submission Akismet calls spam never reaches your CRM or your inbox, because classification happens before any other delivery is given the entry.
Kept, not deleted
Spam is filed rather than destroyed, so a false positive is something you can find and recover instead of a lead that vanished.
Fails in the direction you choose
If Akismet cannot be reached, decide whether submissions are held for review or let through. The choice is explicit rather than an accident of the network.

Add your Akismet key
Paste an Akismet API key into the xpac settings screen. It is stored write-only.

Turn it on for a form
Add the Akismet check to any form that is attracting spam.

Review what it caught
Check the spam view now and then, and mark anything misjudged so Akismet learns from it.

Questions
Do I need the Akismet plugin installed?
No. This talks to the Akismet service directly with its own key, so it works whether or not the comment plugin is active.
Can I use my existing Akismet key?
Yes, provided your plan covers the site. Commercial sites need a paid key.
What is sent to Akismet?
The submitted answers plus the IP address and user agent, which is what the classifier needs. Nothing else about the visitor is included.
Does it replace a CAPTCHA?
They do different jobs. Akismet judges content after the fact; Turnstile or reCAPTCHA stops the bot before it submits. Many sites run both.
